Beer Cicerone Program Logo

The Cicerone Certification Program seeks to improve beer quality by certifying the knowledge and tasting skills of those who sell and serve beer. Knowledgeable beer professionals mean better beer for beer consumers and better business for brewers and businesses who sell beer.

When it was launched, the Cicerone Certification Program brought a new concept to the beer & hospitality industries. Namely, that selling and serving beer wasn't just a simple matter of popping the top off a longneck. After decades of virtual uniformity, beers were no longer all the same; serving them well required knowledge about many styles and flavors. And despite common belief, beer was not immutable. The actions of servers, bars and distributors could spoil beer's flavor. And finally: that beer's broad range of grain, hop and yeast flavors expressed in a wide variety of styles made an unbeatable partner for many foods. Cicerone.org

Maibock_Style_May_2012Style of the Month
Maibock is a beer brewed for release in April and drank at May celebrations (A German tradition). Maibocks are beers that are usually lighter in color and have more assertive hop aromatics and bitterness than other Bock beers. Bock beers originated in the Northern German city of Einbeck. In the 1600s the Bavarians wanted to make something like these beers. Thus Bock ("Billy Goat") beers were made and became quite popular. Why? Power and finesse; Bocks are strong and malty with a smoothness developed over months of aging. Maibocks also have a noticeable maltiness and viscosity, because even though Maibocks are lighter in color, the good ones still retain the higher alcohol content of the original Bock beers. Maibocks are very similar to another strong lager style called Hellesbock, which basically means "pale" or "blond" bock.

From Larry...

May is looking big for craft beer here in South Florida and nationwide. American Craft Beer Week is being celebrated from May 14 - 20 all around the country. Locally the craft beer scene continues to grow and prosper. On the brewery openings front, Due South is opening on Saturday May 12. It took many months of work and 'fighting city hall' to make this happen. Two other breweries,.both in Miami's Wynwood Design District,  are on the drawing boards. Hopefully they are ready for all the work it takes to get these operations up and running. The Beer Blast is changing too; I am adding a new column called "Style of the Month". Each month I will share my knowledge about a particular style. It will be about the style's origin, flavors and other details as each style dictates. This month there is also an article about the Cicerone program for better beer knowledge and service. I am currently studying for the first exam and hope to announce my certification sometime soon. In the meantime, remember to Drink Locally and support local breweries wherever you are.

This just in...Tonight, Tuesday May 1, The Grove Spot 3324 Virginia Street, Coconut Grove is holding their second annual beer pairing dinner. Come on out for "Great old German beers paired with some exquisite foods for a great evening and new ideas" Starts at 7:00 PM

Cheers,

Larry
